$1000.00 RADM J.S. McFarland Scholarship Award presented to Pamlico County High School NJROTC seniors
February 25, 2008 Pamlico County High School NJROTC Program
LCDR Frank Starr, senior naval science instructor at Pamlico County High School in North, Carolina requested consideration for alternative use of the 2008 RADM James S. McFarland NJROTC Scholarship funds. Currently, approximately $1,000 is provided annually to one Pamlico County High School NJROTC cadets to help off-set the costs of college.
This year instead of giving $1,000 to a graduating senior, the selection committee allowed the money to be spent on an orientation trip to Marion Military Institute's (MMI) Knight-Fox Challenge in Marion, Alabama 13-16 March 2008. The total cost of the trip is comparable to the traditional award. However, four cadets would now benefit vice the typical one. More information concerning the Knight-Fox Challenge can be found at http://marionmilitary.edu/admissions/knightfox.da. The trip is worthwhile because it permits cadets to "live" the military college life for a few days to help them decide whether the military is right for them or not. Last year three cadets went on that trip and two decided to attend classes there.
Through an agreement that has been made with MMI, cadets can attend classes for two years, earn an associates degree, get valuable training, make over $1,000 per month, and gain a commission in just two years! There is mandatory PT in the mornings and mandatory study hall in the evenings. For some, it is just what the doctored ordered, but getting them to believe in themselves can be the tricky part.
Next year, we expect to return to a traditional award of the RADM James S. McFarland Scholarhip to a graduating PCHS senior.*
* In 2008, LCDR Frank Starr moved from PCHS to Marion Military Institute in Marion, Alabama. We are determining the new scholarship award criteria.
